Bentonite is a vital component of geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs), ensuring that the liner maintains extremely low permeability in water-rich geological conditions. Bentonite binds with water molecules to form a complex structure, thereby enhancing the water-blocking function of the liner. A geosynthetic clay liner is constructed by placing bentonite between two layers of geotextiles, where either one or both layers can be nonwoven fabrics.
